About Rattan Island
Rattan-Island was established
in 1997 as a small retail rattan and lacquer
gift shop at Scott Market in the heart of Yangon
Myanmar formerly known as Burma under the name
of Mingalar shop. Rattan Island was established
by Burmese partners who enjoyed playing and
creating basket ware gifts which also provided
much needed work for local crafts men who helped
to weave the baskets that they sold in their
retail outlet.
As the increase in travel
became more popular to Burma so did the amount
of passing trade for Mingalar retail shop. It
was in 1998 that a European distributor of home
decorative items spotted the weaving that was
being produced and realized that with the West
becoming more and more aware of nature this
rattan product would be ideal to distribute to
homes, restaurants and hotels if the quality
could be controlled and the production could be
increased.
The following year a joint
partnership would therefore be set up between
the European wholesaler and the Burmese partners
to create a factory manufacturing rattan
decorative accessories in Burma to establish an
export network to distribute home decorative
gift items under the name of Rattan Island. The
Burmese partners input of knowledge of creating
the woven products using the skilled hands of
the local craftsmen and the European partners
inputting designs that are suited for the
international market as well as giving the
education to the Burmese partners regarding
quality controls to produce the items to the
requirements in the west.
Today with a strong
understanding of the international markets
requirements for quality products at a very
competitive price rattan Island has become a
leading manufacturer and exporter of rattan gift
home deco item from Yangon, Myanmar (Burma) to
USA (North America), U.K (England), France,
Spain, Germany, Australia and Japan.
Today all of our products can
be viewed on our website which is updated each
year with a new collection and all our products
are sold at factory prices. Our factory is
situated approximately 1 hour outside, Yangon,
Burma. Using our experience and knowledge of the
international markets, we are able to produce
high quality rattan gift items decorative
accessories, which fulfills the standards of our
European and USA customers requirements at the
lowest prices available in the market for all
occasions whether it is for a Christmas gift,
valentine present or just a much needed natural
treat for yourself.
As well as providing our gift
items to homes around the world Rattan Island
also provides much needed employment to 200
direct workers at our factory and also provides
work to the skilled craftsmen providing the
handicrafts in the villages around Myanmar. Our
factory is equipped with state of the art
manufacturing facilities which covers every
stage of manufacturing starting from raw
materials to the final finished products.
With many of the surrounding
countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia,
and the Philippines with a good supply of
natural resources, Rattan Island's advantage
over our competitors is the low price we offer
and good quality for a very tight weave that is
not possible to create in the neighboring
countries, due to the labor costs involved and
the skilled hands that are required to produce
our decorative items that has been passed down
by generation after generation in Myanmar
